Verti Gaaaaaaaag!

Had a little surprise a while back.  It was pretty scary too.  Imagine just cranking along, going about your daily business and suddenly you start feeling a little queasy.

Next thing you know, you can't walk.  The world is spinning and you're puking anything that gets near your stomach.

I had vertigo.  It. was. horrible....

Turns out it was a benign form of proximal vertigo that comes and goes on
it's own.  Scared the beJesus out of me.  Doc prescribed me something and I'm feeling a lot better.

But I tell you, going through this really makes me appreciate living.  Whereas I would once write off a day that wasn't going well, I now take a little more time to understand what's going on.  I can perhaps see the bright side of that downside.  It's helped me, perhaps it can help you too.

Berzerk!

Remember this game?

Play Berzerk

Many quarters perished in the (vain) pursuit of escape.  Berzerk is sad by the standards of today's games but the strategy and tactics are timeless.

Ironically in the current world of free games, this one would never survive.  But when a kid, and a quarter had to be earned by mowing the lawn, cleaning something, picking up five bottles from the roadside and getting your parents to take you to a store that would give you the redemption, the amount of time spent per quarter was a HUGE factor.

It's laudable that gaming publishers figured out that with the advent of ubiquitous access, giving the game away, getting the user hooked and then offering an in-app purchase would work.

Problems with Cloud Services?

Intermedia didn't think so, before they went down...

For over half a day, from 4.30am to around 6.30pm on Tuesday, the third largest Cloud Service provider was down.

The problem was so bad that you couldn't even call them.  Calls to the tech support line resulted in fast busy or a "Your call could not be completed" RVA message.

Intermedia blamed the problem on "an update" to their core routers.  They said that the update propagated down to all the connected routers and just took their entire network down.  MILLIONS of users were affected.

I'd like to offer an alternative to the identified problem; Hubris.

The folks at Intermedia, while mostly nice and fairly knowledgeable, are in utter denial when problems are presented.  I know this first hand.  When reporting problems to sales or management, the incredulous denial is simply infuriating.

If Cloud Service providers don't learn to listen and drop their pride, this is going to become a trend.  Without exception every Cloud Service provider is currently suffering from a case of "our sh*t don't stink."

Sinclair Quote

Again with the politics...

It is difficult to get a man to understand something
when his job depends on not understanding it.

Upton Sinclair

What's in a name?

By far, my favorite would be "drop table planets"... (sql injection humor)

Einstein Quote

Perhaps members of our political class could take a hint...

The significant problems we have cannot be solved
at the same level of thinking
with which we created them.

It s Not About The Nail

It's like they know my ex-wife!

Please note; I do not hate my ex-wife.  I wish her the best.  This is pretty funny though because it seems just like a conversation we would have had.

Happy Fourth!

J'espère

No matter how long we're together.
I miss her when we're apart.  Honestly even it it's a trip to the store...
Seeing her is like coming home from a long trip.

J'espère

Je fais des e-mails à toute allure
Tu me réponds "à toute à l'heure"

This is (or might not be) water

A while ago I found a video which resonated with me in a big way.  Davi d Fost er did this as a graduation speech for a college and it is, simply, one of the most beautiful things that has ever appeared on the internet.

It will likely mean something to you too.  I hope you enjoy it.  Until the curmudgeonly buttheads find it and file a "copyright claim."  I claim Fair Use as this is definitely a commentary.  An educational, uplifting few minutes.

Enjoy,
Stew

Weird Universe

Found a really interesting post on the science behind the primordial universe.  It's well within reason that the early universe had a long way to go to develop to what we know today with stars, plants, asteroids, etc arranged in galaxies...  But this article discussed the state of dimensions.  It postulates that dimensions will morph over time and become more and more complex.

Check it out.  Worth the read.

GUNS! GUNS! GUNS!

Joe Biden!!!

The thing that bothers me about all this talk of banning certain types of guns, other than the obvious Constitutional aspect, is that once the Government starts taking away our rights guaranteed by the Constitution, where does that same Government stop?

I mean, popularizing the removal of guns in the name of safety, looks and sounds and feels good (to some) but where does it end?

What if your Government decides that too many people are exposing children to threats on the internet.  Do you have to turn in your mouse?

Cars are dangerous to children.  Stop driving says your town mayor.  Think of the children.

You have a house and only one family lives there?  There are children that have nothing.  You must take on a family immediately and share you greedy person you.

You can laugh but the erosion of our Constitution is a very dangerous thing.

Happy 2013

The beatings will continue until morale improves...

There are people that are happy with the current Executive Branch.  Either I'm deluded, or the people happy with the President are.  Guess time will tell who is the deluded, eh?

Meanwhile, life goes on.

My little boy Ali is getting really old :(

W e thought we were going to lose him a couple of weeks ago.  He wouldn't eat and barely drank water and was having siezures every coupl...
